Why Kano Governor Abba Yusuf was fired by the Court of Appeal.
By; Mary Owolabi
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State. The three-member panel, led by Justice Moore A. Adumein upheld the appeal of Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The panel ruled that Yusuf was not a valid candidate in the March 18 gubernatorial election, as evidence showed that he was not a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the time of the election.
The court also stated that Yusuf was not qualified to contest the election due to his inability to be validly sponsored by the NNPP.
The panel emphasized that every political party must maintain its membership register, as mandated by the 1999 Constitution.
The court stated that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP at the time his party purportedly sponsored him and was not qualified to contest the March Governorship Election.
The tribunal overturned the Independent National Electronic Electoral Commission’s announcement of Yusuf with 1,019,602 votes against Gawuna’s 890,705 votes, following the APC’s petition.
The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had declared Gawuna the winner of the March 18 election.
