The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, directed by Dr. Jide Idris, has declared a cholera outbreak in Nigeria, citing contaminated water and food. To help avoid the pandemic, the National Youth Service Corps has given directions to camp directors and officials. The Nigeria Centre has established the National Cholera Multi-sectoral Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate resources and assist affected states. The NCDC evaluated cholera readiness and preparedness capacity in 22 hotspots.

Olubukola Abiodun, NYSC South-West Coordinator, underlined the necessity of preventing cholera epidemics among Nigerians. The Osun State Orientation Camp, one of NYSC’s camps, has taken preventative measures to avert cholera epidemics. These include enhancing cleanliness and kitchens, controlling illness through handwashing, organizing lodging, and screening cooking people before hiring. The camp, which began on June 26th, is part of a bigger initiative to enhance Nigerian sanitation and hygiene standards.

The Tarka Local Government Area in Benue State has outfitted a camp health post with pharmaceuticals for speedy crisis response. The NYSC kitchen promotes hygiene and has adopted measures such as hand-washing stations and jingles. The Kogi State Government verified two instances of cholera in the state, and a reaction team has been formed to investigate, collect samples, and provide treatment. The Ministry of Health in Benue State also attempts to avoid further epidemics.

The Comprehensive Cholera Response Working Group (CTWG) includes stakeholders from the Ministries of Health, Education, Environment, and Agriculture, as well as the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency. The committee will create a comprehensive plan for combating cholera outbreaks in adjacent states. The House of Representatives has encouraged the Federal Government to take steps to prevent the spread of cholera and has directed the Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics, and Values to educate residents on personal hygiene.

The Comprehensive Cholera Response Working Group (CTWG), which addresses the cholera outbreak in adjacent states, includes the Ministries of Health, Education, Environment, and Agriculture, as well as RUWASSA. The group will create a thorough preparedness and reaction plan, improve surveillance, and put in place early warning mechanisms. The House of Representatives has asked the federal government to take immediate action to combat the cholera outbreak and educate individuals on proper personal hygiene.
