10-hour rainfall: Businesses halted, houses collapse as floods engulf Lagos.
By: Adisa Deborah
Seven people were rescued from a collapsed structure in Lagos and Ogun states, as flood-induced gridlock hampered travel. The deluge destroyed a two-story structure in Mushin, Lagos, and displaced thousands. Areas hit by flooding include Iyana-Oworo, Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun, Gbagada, and Lagos Island. Major roads in Ogun State have been inundated, stranding people.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, verified that heavy rains caused the collapse of a two-story building on Cameroon Road in Mushin, Lagos. The structure collapsed owing to severe weather, and seven people were recovered alive. The area has been roped off, and procedures are underway. The Permanent Secretary encouraged Lagos citizens to be calm.
The Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos has experienced flash floods, forcing schools in White Sand Estate, Isheri-Osun, to close owing to hazardous road conditions. The region is heavily impacted by poor roads, insufficient drainage systems, and a lack of upkeep. Johnson Olabode, the area’s Community Development Officer, has advised parents to stay home due to the inclement weather. Abraham Adesanya, a homeowner in White Sand Estate, reported water in her living room. The government is working on a more extensive drainage system, but development has been slow.
The Lagos State Government has had difficulty moving commuters and commercial buses as a result of the flood and traffic congestion in Ikeja. Driver Tunji blamed the floods on a poor drainage system, which caused damage to automobiles and property. Commercial bus drivers and tricycle riders raised the transport fee from N300 to N700 for travels from Ogba to Ikeja. A viral video showed hoodlums extorting locals by demanding an N100 charge before allowing them to use an alternate path under the Trade Fair bridge.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment, revealed that the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps had apprehended miscreants charging visitors to use a temporary crossover bridge at the Trade Fair. Floods devastated numerous localities in Ogun State, including Sango-Ota, Alagbado, Atan, Oju-ore, and Lusada, causing property damage worth millions of naira, according to Abayomi Rufai.
Victoria Ojelana in Oregun, Lagos, was flooded due to severe rainfall, forcing the Lagos lagoon to rise. The Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Wahab, reported nine hours of continuous rainfall, which caused the Lagos lagoon to expand. Governor Dapo Abiodun is being pushed to intervene to assist those affected. Ogun State witnessed flash floods, and inhabitants were advised to relocate to higher ground. Governor Dapo Abiodun is being encouraged to solve floods on the Ilisan-Iperu Road, as well as other challenges in Ogun State.
