According to the Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association, FBTSS, and the National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, a prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles will result in the loss of over 500,000 jobs.

Yesterday, the groups spoke at a demonstration outside the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control’s Lagos office.

While urging the Federal Government to safeguard the jobs of 500,000 Nigerians, demonstrators highlighted the significant economic downsides of the planned ban and urged the government to reconsider its stance.

According to groups, this one measure might force over 500,000 breadwinners out of work and onto the overcrowded Nigerian labor market.

The groups claimed that this new legislation will exacerbate Nigeria’s economic challenges by potentially shutting down the industries that produce these items.

During the rally, Emmanuel Idogien, Vice Chairman for the NUFBTE Lagos Council, stated: “The majority of our employment is in jeopardy.

Furthermore, advocacy campaigns have been launched to educate the public about the consequences of excessive consumption and underage drinking.

They pleaded with NAFDAC and the FG to withdraw the outright ban on these goods while the Agency introduced product regulation and public education rather than tossing the baby out with the bathwater.

“With this ban, counterfeiters and moonshiners will have a field day which will give rise to various health problems” they were quoted as saying.
