Super Eagles of Nigeria vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong has taken to social media to react to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ghana at the National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday evening.
Thomas Partey’s first-half strike was cancelled out by Troost-Ekong who converted a penalty after Ademola Lookman was fouled in the box.
Following a goalless draw in Kumasi on March 25, the Arsenal midfielder’s score proved important, sending the Ghanaians through on away goals.
Following the disheartening outcome, the Watford midfielder apologized to the country and expressed confidence in the team’s ability to recover when they begin a new challenge to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
“On behalf of the team, we want to apologize to all Nigerians for not being able to secure a World Cup ticket,” Troost-Ekong wrote on Instagram.
“I tried everything I could, but it wasn’t meant to be. First and foremost, as Nigerians, we share your feelings and accept our collective responsibilities.
“We warmly thank the Nigerian fans for their unwavering support, as well as the NFF President, who went above and beyond to ensure the qualification, and, of course, the Minister.”
“It’ll be a tough pill to swallow, but trust me when I say we’ll be back better and stronger!”
If Troost-Ekong had qualified for this year’s World Cup after representing Nigeria in the 2018 tournament in Russia, it would have been his second.
