We die daily because we lack the importance of quality services as a people. All our sectors are dying because the act of professionalism has been replaced with favouritism, nepotism, and ill-process. The standard suffers from sympathy. We have mistaken quality for quantity. We have lost the value of living in excellence, not that excellence doesn’t mean perfection, because perfection is a continuous process in human life. In a nutshell, substandard means encouraging a lower level than the average level required.

Substandard services are a pandemic that exists in every sector of a failed nation or society, where activities are done without impact, contracts are executed without evaluation, professionals cut corners to prosper, and the artisans are more concerned with appearance than competence. As a people, until we recognise that services rendered by every individual are geared towards perfection, we might be stagnated in the pool of plenty without value.

Some realities of substandard services in our society are that Ade didn’t suggest the restaurant to anyone because of the meal’s poor quality. The homeowner refused to pay the contractor after seeing his inadequate work on the house. Because of their poor performances at the play’s tryouts, the casting director knew the first three performers would not be cast in the lead roles. When the social worker saw the filthy and infested residence, she realised the children needed to be placed in foster care because of the poor living conditions. Five patients died while at the hospital, prompting complaints to the hospital administration about substandard patient care.

Substandard services must be fought together, or else they will ravage our community soon. We have lost high standards in education, medical, agricultural, and economic life, among others. All in the name of profitablity, we lack the moral ethics of service. With that view, our nation is living in the midst of plenty, yet we have remained inferior to the outside world. We neglect to improve our imperfections, our capacity and our creativity, all in the name of quick fixes and shortcuts. We have lost it all to believe the white man is superior to the black man. The white man will produce, the black man will procure. what piety?

Even when we decide to deploy an indigenous solution, we end up cheating our own future.
