As quoted by Alh. M.A. Bada, “In life, we can either manage to survive or survive to manage.”

Without a doubt, one is a means to an end, and the other is an end to a means. The nation that is struggling to manage to survive is far from a nation that is surviving to manage. Most nations in the world are between survival and success, but some of them are interested in succeeding, not just surviving. The nation that has so much but yet has nothing to show for it is always a path of surviving, not managing.

As beautiful and brilliant as our people are, it is unfortunate to see that we import manpower in the development of our infrastructure every day, every time. We’re not even confident in our expertise; we are never strong enough to face our disabilities.

Yes, we are surviving, not succeeding, because we have not been making effective use of all of our advantages. Smaller nations without resources and big nations with little resources compared to what we have got as a nation are improving their economies every time, and they are empowering their people to be better daily.

The sooner we recognise and retrace our steps, the better for our nation  to continue to survive the trend and tend towards succeeding amid our trials. Smaller countries will someday outshine us because they are running behind to catch up, if we refuse to take the lead in Africa. They will outshine us and they will outlive our advantages, because we are not doing much for ourselves. Until we stand up to pick the right leader, who is on track with the right agenda, we are not ready to manage our resources. Rather, we will keep surviving amid plenty.

Development is like a marathon race. You don’t own the race; you are meant to run your part of the race and pass the baton to the next person. If our leaders understood the reasons why they should pass the baton to each other without unnecessarily condemning themselves, until we understood individual differences by strengthening their weaknesses with complementary opportunities, then we may still be on a long walk to freedom. Until we, as a people, decide to pass the baton of continuous care for the community’s development, we might have nothing meaningful to pass on to the next generations. We are on the road to nowhere if we refuse to act right.

Let’s learn to find our paths together.
