Stakeholders support a 300% salary and allowances rise for judicial officers.

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters in Nigeria has organized a public hearing for shareholders and the general public on a Bill for an Act to prescribe the salaries and allowances of Nigerian judicial office holders, to increase their annual salaries by 300% and review them by international standards.

The Attorney General, Chief Justice, Nigeria Association, Coordinating Minister, and National Judicial Council are all involved in a disagreement over judges’ wages, allowances, and official benefits. The Nigerian court system is encountering issues as a result of volatile depreciation in buying power, emphasizing the necessity for higher pay.

The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission reported that court officers’ salaries were set in 2007 at a US dollar exchange rate of 130.25. This move has resulted in a huge reduction in the value of their salary, from $661,738 to $441 today.

Despite the President’s assent for a 300% rise, the 10th National Assembly’s historic instrumentality and unparalleled temperament are expected to result in an N3.2 million equivalent gross monthly increase. The appropriated salary package is less than half as much as the 2007 salaries.

Wale Edunmwho, Minister of Finance, stressed the genuine interest of citizens in a destitute judiciary. He stressed the need for higher judicial officer salaries and emoluments, expressing trust in President Bola Tinubu’s legacy of raising judicial officials’ living standards. Edunmwho complimented the Attorney General’s authority under government legislation.

Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice praised the Executive Bill for its quick passage through the National Assembly. The law, which includes an increase in the base pay and respects the judiciary’s administrative structure, seeks to foster long-term socioeconomic growth while still ensuring judicial independence and integrity. Fagbemi calls on the Senate to approve the bill in the national interest of advancing the rule of law.
