Simona Halep crushed the Australian Open dreams of Emma Raducanu’s conqueror Danka Kovinic Saturday to power into the last 16.
The two-time Grand Slam winner used all of her expertise to defeat the 98th-ranked Montenegrin 6-2, 6-1 in the third round on John Cain Arena, ensuring her seventh consecutive appearance in the second week.
She will now face French veteran Alize Cornet, who defeated Slovenia’s 29th seed Tamara Zidansek 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round after shocking world No 3 Garbine Muguruza.
“I’m overjoyed that I’ll be able to play the fourth round once more.” “I always want to play in Australia, so maybe that’s why I had strong matches,” Halep explained.
“Close the door” (to my best level). I thought I played well; she was a little fatigued, and she had a tough match ahead of me, but it’s always a tremendous task to walk onto this court and give it your all.
“I’m pretty happy with how I performed, and I’m excited for the next one.”
The regained fitness Romanian came into the tournament with a lot of confidence after winning the Melbourne Summer Set for the first time in 16 months, and she was always in control against Kovinic, who defeated US Open champion Raducanu in round three.
Halep, the 14th seed, has been on fire this week, dropping only nine games in her first two rounds, and she took that form into her match against the 27-year-old.
She breezed through the first set and broke early in the second to set up a clash with Cornet, who rallied from a set down to win her match.
“It was primarily about surviving,” Cornet explained.
“The heat in Australia is unbearable, and I can’t believe I won.”
