According to Hon. Shina Peller’s press secretary, the House of Representatives has approved Shina Peller’s proposal to have the Federal Government reconstruct Ado-Awaye Suspended Lake.
Honourable Shina Peller, a member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, moved a motion in the Nigerian House of Representatives on Tuesday to compel the Federal Government to make budgetary provisions in the 2023 Appropriation estimates for the revamp of Iyake Suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye, Iseyin local government, Oyo State.
In a motion titled “Need to Revamp the Iyake Suspended Lake at Ado-Awaye in Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State,” Honourable Peller stated that Ado-Awaye Hill is a tourist destination that is under-utilized and neglected, despite the presence of several attractions such as the Iyake Suspended Lake, Ishage Rock, Elephant Tree, Ese Awon Agba (footprints of the
In a similar spirit, he asserted that tourism represents a key pillar of growth for the Nigerian economy, accounting for 3.20 percent of the country’s GDP (GDP).
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism employed roughly 2.70 percent of the workforce in 2013 and is expected to grow at a rate of 6.1 percent per year from 2014 through 2024.
Honourable Peller expressed worry that the Iyake suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye, a highly unusual natural event that has the potential to attract tourists from all over the world every year, had been abandoned; he begged that the House decides to:
(i.) Urge the Federal Government to include funding for the Iyake suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye in the 2023 Appropriation Estimates;
(ii) Charge the Culture, Tourism, and Appropriations Committees with ensuring compliance.
The prayers were granted by a large majority of the House.
Iyake Suspended Lake is one of the world’s two suspended lakes. One is in Colorado, United States of America (USA), while the other is the amusing Iyake Lake in Ado-Awaye, Oyo State’s Iseyin local government area. Even in dry seasons, the Iyake lake never dries out, while the water level remains constant throughout rainy seasons. Aside from the lake, the mountain is home to numerous natural and cultural attractions that make it an interesting visit.
It will be recalled that in 2019, Honourable Peller visited Iyake Lake with his children, Sultan and Naomi Peller, as part of a tour organised by the Iseyin Youth Development Group (IYDG).
“Ado Hill is definitely a goldmine that has to be tapped into,” the Iseyin-born federal legislator said during the tour, “and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that we fully explore the great potential of Ado Hill, especially Iyake Suspended Lake, which is one of the only two suspended lakes we have in the world.”
