Serge Gnabry will miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain after testing positive for coronavirus.
Unlike with other players, it does not seem that the forward contracted the virus while on international duty as he came on as a substitute during Bayern’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Bayern confirmed the news in a statement on their website, which read: “Serge Gnabry, 25, has tested positive for coronavirus. The FC Bayern forward is doing well and is isolating at home.”
The news is a blow to Bayern as Gnabry has been a prominent figure this season, making 34 appearances in all competitions and scoring ten goals while also registering five assists.
Those numbers represent a marked decrease on the incredible figures he posted last campaign.
During Bayern’s 2019/20 treble winning season, Gnabry managed 23 goals and 14 assists in 46 games.
The timing of Gnabry’s absence could not be worse.
It comes on the eve of Bayern’s biggest game of the season so far, a Champions League quarter final first leg against PSG.
The tie is a repeat of last year’s final which the German side won 1-0 courtesy of a winner from Kingsley Coman.
Gnabry is not the only player who will be missing on Wednesday
night. Talisman Robert Lewandowski will miss both legs after sustaining an injury on international duty with Poland.
Lewandowski’s influence this season is hard to overstate, with the striker managing 42 goals in 36 matches.
With two of their key players out, Hansi Flick will likely continue with a front three of Leroy Sane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Coman.
The trio started together for the first time without Lewandowski against Leipzig and none of them got on the scoresheet.
