The collapse of a structure containing multiple classrooms at  Diamond Grammar College in Ikang, Bakassi Local Government Area, Cross River State, has killed two students and critically injured several others.

According to SaharaReporters, the tragedy occurred on a Friday afternoon as students were taking an exam at the institution.

It was also learnt that the incident occurred on that fateful afternoon while it was heavy pouring.

‘I saw at least two dead bodies and several injured students being moved out of the school immediately after the building collapsed.

“It was a very horrible sight on Friday; everywhere was in chaos as a result of the incident.

“The heavy rain compounded the whole problem as it made evacuation of students involved in the building collapse quite difficult for rescuers,” an eyewitness living close to the school told SaharaReporters.

Another community resident, Joshua Nnoji, revealed that the occurrence has caused several families in the town to be distressed and that only limited assistance has been provided to families whose children have been touched by the tragedy since Friday.

It is individual and community efforts that have been helping affected families manage the situation since Friday when the building collapsed.

“We have not seen any tangible response from the government. Many of the injured are still in the hospital and need intensive treatment which costs a lot of money. Government should help the families as the burden is too much on them,” he said.

Godwin Amanke, the Commissioner for Quality Education in Cross River State, did not answer  calls or a text message sent to his mobile number when contacted about the event on Monday.

Irene Ugbo, the state’s police spokesperson and a Superintendent of Police, promised to call back our correspondent on Monday, despite the fact that she was in a meeting at the time.

As of the time of this publication, she had yet to do so.
