Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and ex Arsenal striker Ian Wright are among six ex-players who have been inducted into the Premier League’s Hall of Fame, the league said on Thursday.

Schmeichel and Wright join former Manchester City players Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, as well as Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and United’s Paul Scholes.

Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel, who left United in 1999 after eight years at Old Trafford during which they won five Premier League titles, said he had tried his best to leave a lasting legacy.

In a statement, Schmeichel stated, “You have to make the most of that moment and make sure you’re remembered for what you did.”

Wright, who scored 185 goals for Arsenal and won the league and FA Cup double in 1998, said the honor was all the sweeter because he started his professional career late at the age of 21.

In a statement, Wright said, “You have to remember that for the most of my football career, I never imagined I’d become a professional footballer.”

“To be able to accomplish that, to appreciate the times I had with the fans and my teammates, and now to be recognized for it is a genuine honor.”

The six new members join Wayne Rooney and Patrick Vieira, who were both inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The Hall of Fame “celebrates the skill and achievements” of individuals who have played in the division from its formation in 1992, according to the league, and players must have retired by January 1, 2022 to be eligible.
