Roberto Mancini dropped a big hint on Monday that he will stay on as Italy coach despite the Azzurri failing to qualify for the World Cup for a second successive time.

The European champions were beaten by North Macedonia in Thursday’s qualification playoff semifinal for this year’s tournament in Qatar, sparking talk he could resign.

“I’ve spoken with the president of the (Italian Football Federation), Gabriele Gravina, in the last few days, and I think we’re on the same page on pretty much everything,” Mancini said before Italy’s friendly against Turkey in Konya on Tuesday.

“We’ll talk about it again in a few days, and we’ll see each other after this game. Then we’ll take our time to discuss how we might make things better in the future. That is all there is to it.”

Following Italy’s 1-0 defeat in Palermo last week, names such as 2006 World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro and Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti were mentioned.

Mancini’s contract is up in 2026, when Canada, Mexico, and the United States will co-host the World Cup.
