The Peoples Democratic Party has taken a bold step to woo former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Nicholas Felix, to join the PDP with the promise to ensure that he clinches the Edo State governorship ticket ahead of the election in 2024.
This incident comes just one month after the youngest candidate for the APC complained that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s standard-bearer, had barred him from participating in his campaign for the general election of 2023.
Felix, the youngest candidate for the APC, backed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo after he resigned during the presidential primary on June 7.
Felix declared Osinbajo to be the “best guy for the job” before to withdrawing from the presidential campaign and said he was confident in his ability to turn the country around positively.
Contrary to his expectations, Tinubu won the party’s single presidential nomination by defeating Osinbajo, Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transportation, Ahmad Lawan, the Senate president, and 11 other candidates.
The APC candidate’s worries surfaced a few days before the party’s nominee for president arrived home from his vacation to France.
Bayo Onanuga, the director of media and communications for the Tinubu Campaign Organization, had revealed that he wouldn’t like to get involved in Felix’s problems while downplaying his suspicion.
Onanuga thought that his exclusion might either be an oversight or that he was probably out of the country when the parley took place, despite the fact that Tinubu had made a concerted attempt to contact every candidate who attended the APC Convention in Eagle Square.
Felix told our correspondent that he received numerous calls from prominent campaigners and Tinubu’s supporters after his interview in Sunday PUNCH went viral. Many of them accused Felix of attempting to blackmail their principal.
A helpless Felix claimed that he was numbed and despondent for days after the outrage but would not give their identities.
What’s all this hysteria about? was one of the anonymous Whatsapp messages made available to The PUNCH.
sounds like blackmail and is undoubtedly ineffective. It smells unnecessarily desperate, in my opinion.
He stated, “I received a number of messages after the PUNCH piece was released, particularly this one from one of his crew, who I will not name. Although I found that extremely shocking, I refrained from reacting since I am confident that our APC flagbearer, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is an experienced politician and won’t do so.
According to what I’ve learned about him and from those who have worked closely and directly with him, he won’t put up with any supporters or members of his campaign staff acting in this way.
“I am only extremely worried that some of these guys may portray him in a negative light. I anticipate that everyone will be able to cooperate if we are to win this election.
There is a lot going on. The absolute least we could do at this point is to bring everyone together rather than try to combine the problems or get into further trouble.
The candidate acknowledged that some of the messages were comforting and reassuring, especially those from the opposition PDP.
The politician admitted that he received a “offer” from some party chieftains to consider succeeding incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki when he leaves office in two years when asked about the rumor going around that he is planning to leave the ruling party for the PDP before the governorship election in 2024.
But at this time, I am not considering it. I’m staying in the APC for sure,” he declared.
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s spokesman, denied knowing about the development when he was asked for comment.
Felix Morka, the APC’s national publicity secretary, also voiced concerns about the report.
I don’t respond to rumors, he declared. Let the defection-minded man verify or refute it.
Onanuga, however, revealed to our correspondent on Tuesday that his principle has started speaking with pertinent parties and religious authorities.
I’m reassuring you once more that the candidate is reaching out to everyone concerned, he said.
