Panic as a truck slams into Anambra residential structure.
By: Adisa Deborah
A 40-foot truck with registration number Delta ASB 405YZ, packed with cement, rammed into No 161 Beverly Hills Estate, GRA in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Sunday, causing panic.
Although no one was killed in the event, Metro learned that the driver lost control of the vehicle while driving down the hilly road and drove into the residential complex, breaking two exotic automobiles, a perimeter fence gate, and pillars, among others.
Trouble was claimed to have begun when the driver refused to follow the estate’s Chief Security Officer’s admonition to turn back, stating that heavy-duty vehicles were not permitted to drive on the estate due to the topography of the surroundings.
The driver attempted to negotiate his way to the location where the cement would be off-loaded in an unfinished building, but the weight of the cement forced the vehicle to descend the hill immediately. In the process, it rammed into the residential building, smashing the two cars, the perimeter fence gate, the wall, and the pillars of the house, among other things, according to a source who spoke to our correspondent in the estate on the condition of anonymity.
The landlord, Uche Adoga, a retired civil servant, stated that his family members were upstairs in the one-story duplex when the tragedy occurred at 8 a.m. that tragic day.
Adoga explained, “I was with my family upstairs when I heard a thunderous roar and was shocked. When I looked outside and saw people gathered, I fell into a coma before regaining consciousness later.
The truck smashed my two cars, including a newly purchased one, as well as a Venzer jeep. It also smashed the fence gate, wall, pillars, and other items beyond recognition. The driver, who is currently detained at the 3’3 police station, was making calls and attempted to flee but was apprehended by sympathizers and landlords.
He described how the driver was brought to the police station and arrested, and how the truck was towed there with the cooperation of the landlords, who blamed the driver for not following their earlier advice not to ply the area.
“The worst part is that since the incident occurred, the principal to the driver has not shown any concern by coming to assess the extent of the damage and speak with me about how to get out of the woods since we are humans. “He wants to frustrate me and my family,” he explained.
When reached, CSP Chukwunonso Onunkwo, the Divisional Police official in Charge of the 3’3 Police Station, was not present; nevertheless, a senior police official, who requested anonymity, verified the driver’s incarceration but denied further comment.
