The popularity of virtual learning surged during the pandemic, with private universities and some secondary schools being the early adopters. However, the question arises: is this approach viable for all levels of education? As an educator in an online school catering to students from Nursery to Junior Secondary levels, I’ve identified several key elements that contribute to a successful online learning experience for young students.
1. Parental Participation: A reliable internet connection alone is insufficient if students are left to manage their classes independently. Instances have been observed where students exit classes, mute their devices, or turn off their cameras. Beyond classroom supervision, students require assistance with assignments, particularly considering the likelihood of forgetting tasks due to extended home-based learning.
2. Structured Timetable: A comprehensive schedule extends beyond class hours. Including designated times for play, assignments, and study sessions aids in instilling discipline among students. Such a schedule not only benefits students but also eases the burden on parents, who can rely on a predefined routine.
3. Dependable Internet Connectivity: Needless to say, a stable internet connection is paramount. Students cannot effectively engage in a class if they are frequently disconnected, leading to reduced concentration and engagement.
4. Social Interaction: Home-based education necessitates deliberate efforts to facilitate social interaction. Enrolling students in virtual evening schools, arranging playdates with peers, and enrolling them in physical summer schools are avenues to foster their social skills during these formative years.
5. Assessment and Feedback: Both parents and teachers should employ a diverse range of assessment methods, including quizzes, assignments, projects, and online discussions, to gauge student comprehension. Offering prompt and constructive feedback empowers students to monitor their progress and implement necessary enhancements.
In conclusion, the prevalence of virtual learning, accelerated by the pandemic, raises questions about its applicability across various educational tiers. Drawing from my experience, a successful online education environment necessitates active parental involvement, a well-structured schedule, consistent internet access, intentional social engagement, and effective assessment practices. By embracing these principles, educators can create a more enriching and effective online learning journey for students of all ages.
