NIMC is under criticism for alleged dollar billing on NIN updates.

By: Adisa Deborah

On Monday, a social media user accused the National Identity Management Commission of demanding costs in dollars for National Identification Number data revisions on their portal, sparking widespread outrage.

Akwa Ibom First Son, a Nigerian user, tweeted about the NIMC website’s $20.78 price for Nigerians, asking clarification.

In response, NIMC stated that the portal does not charge in dollars and blamed the problem on the virtual private networks.

“The use of VPNs can cause the website to detect a different location and currency,” according to the board.

To remedy the issue, NIMC urged users to disable their VPNs and try again. If the situation persists consumers should contact the support team for additional assistance.

Meanwhile, the NIMC Self-Service Modifications portal allows citizens and legal residents aged 16 and up to modify their name, phone number, date of birth, and address.

Some data fields cannot be updated. According to information obtained from its website, the approved charge for a request to amend one’s date of birth is N15,000.

The public’s reaction to the NIMC’s explanation was generally unfavorable.

Another X user, Yasir Jubril, wrote, “There is certain foul play here! Service charges should be in naira, regardless of location. And why is changing one’s name or address so expensive?

Other X users shared the same sentiment calling into question the payment system’s technological design.

“Naira card can be used from anywhere.” “All of their charges regardless of their location should be in local currency,” John Wick stated.

Isa Kabir shared his experience, claiming that the portal initially offered fees in naira but eventually displayed them in dollars.

“I had to send multiple emails until the issue was resolved. “Rather than working on the site, they’re here making excuses,” he said.

Earlier this month, NIMC Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote emphasized the commission’s commitment to transparency.

“My administration has no tolerance for corruption.

“I thus reiterate my commitment to sanitizing the NIMC by Mr President’s mandate. “In Nigeria, enrolling for a National Identification Number is free,” she stated.
