Border Security have intercepted an American immigrant who was in possession of firearms at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The male passenger (names withheld) arrived in the country at 10:10 a.m. on a United Airlines flight from Houston, Texas.
According to reports, the passenger checked in the firearms without disclosing them as required by international firearms carriage legislation.
The weaponry, which included a pistol, a Barretta, and 26 rounds of 9mm ammunition, were discovered hidden in his luggage.
The person was reportedly said to have two international passports, one Nigerian and the other American.
According to a source at the airport, the American citizen did not disclose the firearms at the airport.
Another source told Daily Trust that the passenger had some documentation from the United States that authorized him to carry firearms, but that the papers’ legitimacy could not be verified.
The traveller was still being probed at the airport’s immigration office at the time of reporting this report.
According to the source:
“Officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service actually intercepted the passenger with the firearms during screening. The passenger is undergoing scrutiny from the officials of the service and will be handed over to the relevant authorities after interrogation. “Besides, we learned that the passenger with dual citizenship has the approval of the US Government to carry firearms, but such should have been declared at the port of entry, which he didn’t do. However, we are yet to verify the documents he’s carrying.”
According to a statement released by the Service headquarters, the Lagos Airport Comptroller, CIS Kemi Nandap, stated that the Service had obtained credible intelligence that the passenger boarded the plane in Houston and had a handgun concealed in his luggage.
