The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken a decisive stance in its commitment to upholding the integrity of the legal profession by initiating investigations into several serious allegations. The recent monthly meeting of the NBA’s National Executive Committee (NEC), presided over by NBA President Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, yielded the unanimous decision to delve into the allegations of sexual assault, bribery attempts, and unbecoming behavior.
Among the cases under scrutiny is the allegation of sexual assault against Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar. A group of female law students from the university asserted that Prof. Ndifon sexually molested them. The NBA’s decision to investigate this matter underscores its commitment to ensuring that all members of the legal community adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards.
Furthermore, the NBA is looking into allegations of attempted bribery involving a judge handling petitions arising from the National Assembly and State House Assembly elections in Kano State. Mr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State. Mr. Yunusa-Ari is facing allegations of attempting to bribe a judge involved in petitions arising from the National Assembly and State House Assembly elections in Kano State. The NBA has filed a petition against him, urging the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to investigate the matter thoroughly.
