The Nigerian Correctional Service is being digitalized, according to Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola. A command and control room has been established at the National Headquarters, and effective surveillance has been installed in the custodial centers to monitor the activities in a few chosen centers.
This was said by Aregbesola in his speech on Monday at the inauguration of the service operational vehicles, junior staff quarters, command and control rooms for information and communications technology, unveiling of the new uniform for the NCoS staff, and award presentation to selected staff for bravery.
He added that this new development would allow for monitoring of prisoners without violating their legal rights.
Aregbesola stated, “The NCoS is currently becoming digitalized in accordance with what is available internationally. At order to monitor the activity in a few chosen centers, an effective surveillance system has been installed in the custodial centers and a command and control room has been established at the national headquarters. Given that it is the first of its kind in NCoS history, this is a noteworthy milestone.
“With constant surveillance of the detention facilities, convicts may be watched over without having their rights violated. With this development, jailbreaks and riots in our detention facilities can be stopped in their tracks before they spiral out of control, and external attacks can also be thwarted because the service has eyes everywhere.
Aregbesola noted during the inauguration that the operable cars will help transport prisoners to court and to their appointment with justice.
The move from a punitive jail system to a reformatory correctional system, which is now the service’s attitude, was symbolized by the new uniform, he continued.
According to the Minister, “The NCoS is mandated by law to convey convicts in detention awaiting trial to have their days in court. The system for delivering justice depends on this. Inability to appear in court would result in an adjournment and a drawn-out trial because the courts could not possibly be present for a specific suspect’s case.
“As a result, operable vehicles have been purchased to make it easier for prisoners to get to and from court and to their scheduled court appearance. I firmly believe that these vehicles will accomplish the desired results.
“In keeping with the Service’s dedication to enhancing employee welfare, we are also present today to dedicate structures intended for the housing of junior workers. Since they will have the chance to live inside the National Headquarters, this will improve early return to duty and service delivery as envisaged.
“Recent external attacks on various detention facilities resulted in the escape of some prisoners. Some staff members died while trying to get them back into custody, and others suffered various injuries. We salute the tenacity, sense of patriotism, and courage of all the officers who carried out their duty as required of them during these situations.
The NCoS Act, 2019, section 26 subsection 2a and b, which states that the purpose of the Correctional Officers Reward Fund is for “rewarding correctional officers for extra or special service such as gallantry, long or meritorious service,” states that rewarding such brave officers is in accordance with.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service must adopt a new look for its uniform to reflect corrections both in name and in practice as a result of the name change from Nigerian Prisons Service to Nigerian Correctional Service. Therefore, we are also present to reveal the NCoS’s new uniform.
The NCoS basic requirements must be realized, according to the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, who made this statement in his welcome speech.
Nababa continued, “The Service will witness considerable progress in service-delivery with the new development.
Indeed, the enormous expenditures that governments have made in the Service are justified because the NCoS is highly motivated and ready to take on new challenges.
The Minister unveiled a block of junior staff barracks, 40 operational vehicles, and a situation/monitoring room.
