Michael Masi has been replaced as F1 race director following a review into last year’s Abu Dhabi GP, the FIA has confirmed.
Masi had been under intense pressure due to is the handling of the 2021 finale, namely for the Safety Car decisions that opened the door for Max Verstappen to pass Lewis Hamilton for a controversial race and title win.
On Thursday, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced a series of structural changes as part of a’step forward for Formula 1 refereeing,’ one of which is that former DTM race director Niels Wittich and WEC race director Eduardo Freitas will alternate as F1’s race director.
Masi will be offered a new position within the FIA, according to reports, which will be in the area of safety.
Herbie Blash will be the permanent senior advisor to Wittich and Freitas, with Blash returning to F1 five seasons after leaving down as deputy race director to the late Charlie Whiting.
From next week’s test in Barcelona, the new race management staff will be in place.
A Virtual Race Control Room, such as football’s VAR, will be established, and direct radio connections between teams and the race director will be eliminated.
Before the season starts in Bahrain on March 18, the F1 Sporting Advisory Committee will study the unlapping method behind the Safety Car and present it to the F1 Commission.
