Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof will miss Saturday’s English Premier League encounter against West Ham after his wife and children were forced to flee their home following a “traumatic” break-in while he was on the pitch in midweek.

Maja Nilsson Lindelof, the Swedish defender’s wife, revealed the incident on social media after United’s 3-1 win over Brentford on Wednesday.

“I was home alone with both kids,” she said on Instagram, “but we managed to hide and lock ourselves in a room before they entered our house.”

“Under the circumstances, we’re fine, but it was a stressful and frightening experience for both myself and my little children.”

“We’re currently in Sweden, where we’ll be spending some time with our families.”

United stated their support for Lindelof and urged anyone with knowledge to contact the authorities.

The club claimed in a statement that “his family, who were at home at the time, were unharmed but upset.”

“This was a traumatic event for them, as well as Victor, who found out about it after the game, and the club is offering them our entire support.”

After the incident, United interim manager Ralf Rangnick stated he had given Lindelof permission to miss training on Friday.

“He told me what had happened and that it had been a really painful incident for his wife and even his three-year-old son,” the German added.

“He told me that he has to stay at home right now.” He doesn’t want to leave his wife and children alone, which I understand well as a father of two children.

“We agreed that he would not practice today and would not be on duty for the game tomorrow.”

Three weeks prior, Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo was assaulted during a break-in at his home, resulting in facial injuries.
