There have been suggestions that Barcelona’s presidential elections may well be delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic impacting Europe, but candidate Joan Laporta has maintained that the elections simply must take place on January 24.

Laporta is one of the leading candidates aiming to become president of Barcelona.

“The club cannot operate without a president or without a board of directors any longer,” Laporta explained.

“The elections have to be on January 24.

“There are no objective reasons of any kind to delay the collection of signatures or to delay the vote.

“We have the same obstacles as everyone else, to change the date would be to alter the electoral process and could provoke challenges to the result of the election.”

Unlike his campaign back in 2003, Laporta hasn’t used flash names and promises to get people onside. Instead, he is keeping his cards close to his chest on potential appointments.

“I have already said that I will not name names,” he added.

“Due to the knowledge we have of football and the reality of our club, we will make the changes that we consider appropriate.

“I will not give names, it’s the rule we have imposed on ourselves so as not to destabilise the first team.”

When asked to give his response on the polling done thus far, the former president simply said he was focused on business.

“We’re focused on this phase of the electoral process,” he confirmed.

“Here we have worked hard to get the maximum number of guarantees possible.

“We don’t think about if we’re favourites, but we have a winning mentality.”
