Joseph Egbunike, a deputy inspector general and the chief of the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), has died, according to SaharaReporters.
In the late hours of Tuesday, March 8th, Egbunike fainted inside his Abuja office.
Egbunike was the head of the Nigeria Police Force’s highest investigative unit until his death.
Investigation and prosecution of major and complex criminal cases both inside and outside the country are among its responsibilities. The department is also in charge of coordinating criminal investigations and prosecutions across the whole force.
Despite accusations by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Egbunike investigated suspended police commander Abba Kyari in late 2021 but did not indict him.
In July, Egbunike was charged with contempt for allegedly disobeying a Federal High Court order issued by the Enugu Judicial Division.
Egbunike earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Nsukka. He also had a bachelor’s degree in law, a master’s degree in international relations, and a doctorate in criminal justice.
He’s also in charge of Abba Kyari’s Hushpuppi fraud case.
