Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has ruled himself out of the race to take over as Manchester United boss.

The Spaniard had been considered by the Old Trafford club as a contender for the role when Ralf Rangnick steps back from interim charge at the end of the season for a consultancy position.

But according to the Mirror, Lopetegui has committed himself to Sevilla and will not interview for the job.

Lopetegui has rebuilt his reputation since his ignominious sacking as Spain boss midway through the 2018 World Cup for his open flirtation with Real Madrid.

He duly took charge at the Bernabeu but lasted only two months before being dismissed following a run of poor results.

At Sevilla, he led the team to the Europa League title in 2019 and remains in charge, spearheading a title challenge for much of this season before they fell away.

He was not considered among the front-runners for the Manchester United job, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Ten Haag still seen as the most likely options, although Luis Enrique is another contender.

Pochettino remains at PSG but his future is far from certain after yet another failed Champions League campaign.

While the time could be right for Ten Haag, who has won so many admirers at Ajax.

Holland boss Louis van Gaal has warned his compatriot against the job having spent two seasons in charge from 2014-16.

‘Erik ten Hag is a great manager and that’s good for Manchester United, but Manchester United are a commercial club,’ Van Gaal said.

‘I’m not going to advise him but he should choose a football club, not a commercial one.’

Ten Haag has already been interviewed by United about the position and time will tell if he has impressed enough to land the enormous job.
