[ICYMI] Step-by-step approach to unblock your MTN, Airtel, and others using shortcode

By: Adisa Deborah

Nigerian telecommunications firms have issued clear directions to assist users in unblocking their SIM cards following recent disconnections caused by the current National Identification Number (NIN)-SIM harmonization effort.

This initiative, which attempted to improve the integrity of the national SIM registration database, has resulted in many consumers experiencing temporary service outages.

To aid affected customers, telecom firms started on Monday outlining a step-by-step plan for restoring service.

  1. Airtel: Dial *121# and enter your 11-digit NIN. A confirmation message will appear once your Airtel SIM card has been successfully unbarred.
  2. 9mobile (EMTS): dial *200*8#.
  3. Glo: Dial 109 followed by your NIN number (e.g., *109*12345678901#) and follow the steps to enter your NIN.

  1. MTN: Go to [nin.mtn.ng](http://nin.mtn.ng) to verify your NIN status. If it is not linked, then link it. A one-time password and a unique identification number are required. Once joined, your line will be instantly unbarred.
  2. Smile: Please send your NIN to customercare@smile.com.ng or phone 07020444444. After obtaining consent and validating your NIN, your line will be unbarred.

  1. Spectranet: To submit your NIN, call 800-2345678 or email care@spectranet.com.ng. KYC verification at a Spectranet location is required. You can also submit your NIN online, but you must complete KYC at a Spectranet location.
  2. Ntel: Show your NIN at any Ntel store. Your fingerprint will be used to verify your current KYC profile. After verification and permission, your line will be updated and unbarred.
