Guinea held Senegal to a nil draw in an 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group B match at the Kouekong Stadium in Cameroon on Friday afternoon.

Guinea and Senegal remained top and second in the group standings after the draw, with both teams tied on points heading into their final group game on Tuesday.

The National Elephants got off to a strong start, with captain and star midfielder Naby Keita establishing himself in the middle of the park.

Following a wonderful move begun by Keita as he carried the ball into the Lions of Teranga’s half, the Guineans should have broken the deadlock in the 31st minute.

Ilaix Moriba then set up Keita, who played a defence-splitting pass for Josuha Guilavogui, but the VLF Wolfsburg striker nevertheless managed a poor effort that goalkeeper Seny Dieng stopped.

This was the game’s sole clear-cut chance in the first half, which saw Guinea neutralize Senegal’s key forwards Sadio Mane and Boulaye Dia, and the score remained 0-0 at the break.

Senegal came back stronger after a halftime team meeting with coach Aliou Cisse, and they scored their first goal of the game four minutes before the hour mark.

Aly Keita saved Abdou Diallo’s headed effort after he connected with a cross from the left.

With the Lions of Teranga driving for the opening goal, Aly Keita was in fantastic form between the posts for the National Elephants, making a fine save to deny Mamadou Loum.

With 12 minutes remaining on the clock, Guinea coach Kaba Diawara introduced Mory Konate as the National Elephants tried to retake control of the game and score a late winner.

Neither team, however, was able to create the clear-cut chances needed to win the game, and the game finished in a 0-0 stalemate.
