Under the banner of the Africa Youth Growth Foundation, a civil rights organisation has called on Nigeria’s National Assembly to embrace gender equality in order to boost the country’s essential growth.
The National Assembly’s rejection of all bills connected to gender issues during the voting on modifications to the 1999 Constitution was regarded by the organisation as “a setback in the task of mainstreaming women in the country’s administration.”
Dr. Arume Salifu, the AYGF’s Executive Director, shared these sentiments in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday.
“As Nigerians, we were not only shocked but also disappointed by the National Assembly’s actions in refusing to give assent to five Bills that had the greatest interest of women at heart in promoting and mainstreaming at the centre stage of governance, political party participation, and entrenching their place in society,” he said. Those constitutionally voted to defend women’s interests have ignored the lobbying of civil society organisations and women’s groups over the years.”
As a result, Arume stated that the most significant impediment to the process was the denial of 35 per cent appointed positions for women in favour of 20 per cent, the denial of women’s active participation in party administration and leadership, and the obstruction of women’s seats in the National Assembly.
“As the 2023 elections approach, this would have been a fantastic opportunity to test and apply these critical changes to our society so that Nigerian women might not only experience a sense of belonging but also contribute their knowledge and brilliance to national growth.”
