An Ex-Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police Force, Tafa Balogun is dead.
He died in a hospital in Lekki, Lagos state at about 8:30 pm on Thursday after a brief illness.
The former police officer was appointed IGP in March 2002. He was born on August 25, 1947, in Ila Orangun, Osun State. His age was 74.
On April 4, 2005, Balogun made national headlines when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), led by Nuhu Ribadu, filed charges against him for the years 2002 to 2004 while he was the Inspector General of Police. He was charged with robbing more than $100 million and laundering it.
He was given a six-month prison sentence after entering a guilty plea to eight of the 56 count-charges.
The court ordered him to pay N500,000 on each of the eight allegations against him, for a total of N4,000,000.
