The Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akure, Ondo State, was gutted by fire on thursday evening. Chief Fire Officer in the state, Mr Adanalwo Philips, who confirmed the incident, said the situation was currently being put under control.

He said, “The fire only gut a container in a confined section, which is very close to the office the commission. It was about spreading inside the offices when we raced to the venue but we have been able to put the situation under control. It is not what we should be worried about.”

The inferno destroyed no fewer than 5,000 card readers meant for the Oct. 10 governorship election in Ondo State. It was gathered that the fire which started around 7.30 pm razed the large container housing the card readers. Prof. Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, said that some of the damaged card readers were brought in from the neighbouring Osun State. Okoye, who expressed shock at the incident, which he described as a setback, however, said that it would not affect the conduct of the governorship election.

He, however, said that investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the incident.
