Out of all the methods, schema has proven to be the most efficient as it provides directions for readers as to hoe they should retrieve or construct meaning from their own previously acquired knowledge. The theory of schema can be used to help guide students to comprehend a text from different point of view. Therefore, the roles of schema theory in comprehension cannot be ignored.

Schema Theory

  • Schema theory explains how the human mind organize information, knowledge and memories, the mind organizes and categorizes information into schema and this influences the behavior and thinking ability of humans.
  • What is a Schema?
  • Schema is a cluster of related pieces of information, knowledge and memory stored in the mind. Schema is also referred to as a ‘cognitive framework’ as it involve the process of organizing and categorizing information.

  • Reading becomes more meaningful and interesting when the reader is introduced to reading using realistic events, objects, experiences and situations. The learner will be able to find what he is reading more relatable, make meaningful connection and comprehension becomes easier.
  • Rely On a Self-Paced Learning Approach

The aim of achieving reading comprehension cannot be fulfilled if self-paced learning is not practiced. Readers do not need to be rushed as that would only confuse them the more.

  • The reader must basically be perceived to move on to the next stage before proceeding with him/her.

Put Information into Context

  • This varies from child to child, what reader A has prior knowledge about might differ from what reader B has. Putting information into context will require to gather information about the learner to know what each learner’s existing knowledge is, so when they are introduced to new ideas and information, it would not seem strange to them.
