Turkish Super League giants Galatasaray has parted ways with Fatih Terim, former Turkey and AC Milan manager, on Monday after a poor run knocked the Istanbul club out of title contention.
He became a hero after leading Galatasaray to the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup double in 2000, making them the first Turkish team to achieve it.
After guiding the national team and Serie A clubs AC Milan and Fiorentina, the 68-year-old former Galatasaray defender returned to the club as manager for the third time in 2017.
Galatasaray won two additional championships under his guidance, bringing their total to 23.
Last season, the team finished a heartbreaking second, tied on points with long-time Istanbul rivals Besiktas but lost the title on goal difference.
However, their recent run has been poor, with three losses in their previous five games leaving them in 12th place and closer to relegation than a title.
He lashed out at fans for failing to support the club after the team was called off the pitch after losing 1-0 at home to Giresunspor on Saturday.
“It’s possible that the fans are enraged,” Terim said after the game.
“Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a season in which we do not win even on our best days.”
Terim quit after a meeting with the club president, according to the TRT state media.
He will leave his position with the club immediately, according to a statement released by the club.
