Aston Villa are closing in on a £25m deal for Everton defender Lucas Digne and talks are at a progressive level.
Everton have enquired about Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi in a separate development.
Villa have been tracking Digne, 28, since he fell out of favor with Everton manager Rafael Benitez, and talks have developed between the two teams.
Meanwhile, Villa has signed Barcelona player Philippe Coutinho on a loan deal.
The Brazilian international’s contract contains a £33 million option to buy him at the end of the season.
The Midlands club said: “Philippe Coutinho arrived at Bodymoor Heath on Tuesday afternoon to finalise his move to Aston Villa.”
“Having landed in Birmingham, he went straight to the club’s training facilities, having successfully finished his physical and secured a work visa,” Villa said.
After not starting for Everton since December 1, Benitez revealed last week that France international Digne “doesn’t want to be here.”
Several clubs, including Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Serie A clubs, have expressed interest in signing the left-back, but Villa appear to be in the driver’s seat.
El Ghazi is valued at £15 million by Everton, but the Goodison Park club prefers to sign him on loan until the end of the season rather than as a permanent signing.
El Ghazi, a Dutch winger, joined Villa Park in 2019 after a season on loan from Ligue 1 side Lille.
The 26-year-old has made 71 Premier League appearances for the Villains, scoring 15 goals in the process, but has been used sparingly since manager Steven Gerrard took over.
