Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia are in talks to jointly host the 2030 World Cup football tournament, an Egyptian official said Friday in televised remarks.

The three nations are “working extremely hard,” according to Mohammed Fawzi, spokesman for the sports ministry, who also added that “the application to organize (the 2030 World Cup) is being considered.”

He emphasized that his nation had hosted numerous global championships over the previous three years and asserted that Egypt would be “one of the best countries” to organize such a sporting event.

The three nations were in talks about submitting a joint candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup, according to a source at the Hellenic Football Federation of Greece, who spoke to AFP in Athens.

In order to avoid the severe temperatures in the three countries, as with this year’s World Cup in Qatar, the event, if successful, would be hosted in the northern winter, according to a Thursday story from the British newspaper The Times.

There are at least two more joint bids that Egypt, Greece, and Saudi Arabia will have to contend with.

Earlier in August, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay confirmed their intention to bid to host the 2030 World Cup, while Spain and Portugal announced their combined candidacy last year.

The united South American candidacy seeks to hold the 2030 championship game in Montevideo’s Centenario stadium, which hosted the first title game a century ago.

The 2030 tournament host will be decided by FIFA, the governing body of world football, in 2024.
