Diego Costa has bade farewell to Atletico Mineiro after terminating his contract with the Brazilian club.

The 33-year-old only joined Antonio Mohamed’s side last summer after calling time on his second stint at Atletico Madrid.

But just five months into his spell at the Estadio Mineirao, the Spanish striker has parted company with Atletico and could now be heading back to England, with Arsenal reportedly considering a free transfer.

‘Today, officially, I say goodbye to Atletico,’ Costa wrote on Instagram.

‘I would like to thank all Massa Atleticana for all the support and affection I received from the first to the last day. Thank you so much for being part of my childhood dream of playing in Brazilian football and winning titles.

‘I would also like to express my gratitude to the entire technical staff, medical department, employees and especially to my teammates who helped me daily, always doing everything to make me feel comfortable.

‘The feeling that remains is gratitude to all of you Athleticans. Thank you and I wish you all the success in the world!!!’

Costa is understood to have held informal symposia with Arsenal, who are on the hunt for a new striker this winter.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is expected to leave the Emirates after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta, meaning a replacement is needed this month.

Costa, who scored 59 goals in 120 appearances for their London rivals Chelsea, is being eyed as a potential short-term option.

Arsenal face competition for his signature, nevertheless, as Brazilian sides Corinthians and Sao Paolo, along with Spanish team Cadiz, are also thought to be interested.
