Former Real Madrid and Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas has returned to the club as assistant to the director general.
The former goalkeeper, 39, a Real legend who won a staggering 19 trophies over 25 years in the Spanish capital.
He retired from playing this August having returned following a major health scare in the form of a heart attack on the training pitch with Porto in May last year.
Casillas posted is response to the announcement of his appointment on Instagram.
He wrote: ‘Proud to come home. I face this new challenge with all the enthusiasm and desire in the world, thank you for the welcome.
Real posted: ‘Iker Casillas is a Real Madrid legend who represents the values of our club and is the best goalkeeper in our history.
‘He has received prestigious awards for both his sporting career and his human qualities, such as the Prince of Asturias Sports Award, the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit, the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit and the Gold Medal of the Community of Madrid.
‘Real Madrid are proud to welcome one of their great captains back home.’
Casillas is widely regarded as one of the great goalkeepers in history and has the trophy collection with club and country to back it up.
He made 167 appearances for Spain, winning the World Cup once and European Championship twice.
Casillas is Real Madrid through and through having played 725 competitive matches between 1999 and 2015 and been in the academy since 1990.
He left the club in 2015 for Porto and won two Portuguese Primeira Liga titles. Then the news of a heart attack shook the world of football in 2019.
Casillas fortunately recovered enough to train again but did not manage to play competitively for Porto after the scare, eventually calling it quits this summer.
