Belgian footballer Miguel van Damme has died at the age of 28 following a long battle with leukaemia.
Van Damme’s Belgian top-flight club, Cercle Brugge, said “words are not enough to describe what we feel” following the news on Tuesday.
Over five years ago, the goalie was diagnosed with the condition for the first time.
“It is with great sadness that we report that our friend and teammate Van Damme has lost his long and difficult struggle with cancer,” the club stated in a statement.
“Miguel, your courage and perseverance in going for it [again] despite setback after setback was amazing.
“You are a model of optimism, perseverance, and tenacity. Everyone who fights has to read this book. #16 will live on in our green-black hearts forever.”
Van Damme was diagnosed with leukemia during a medical examination ahead to the 2016-17 season, however, the disease resurfaced in 2019 and 2020.
Last year, he and his wife Kyana Dobbelaere welcomed their first child, Camille.
On Instagram, Dobbelaere wrote: “Last night, our dearest darling, daddy departed for his final match, a match that he can no longer win. You left us slowly, but you came back in your own unique way… very strong.
“You battled with the ferocity of a lion. We are eternally grateful for who you were. Many people can learn from this example. You have shown me that there is no such thing as quitting up; even if there was only a sliver of success, you were able to overcome it time and time again.
“Rest now, dear, you’ve more than earned it; you’re now pain-free.”
According to the Belgian Pro League: “His family, friends, and everyone at Cercle Brugge are in our thoughts.
“Your fighting spirit has been inspiring. Rest in peace.”
