Bayern Munich were the only champions from Europe’s top eight leagues to make a profit in 2020-21 as the coronavirus pandemic hit European football according to a report released.
The KPMG Football Benchmark’s “European Champions Report” analysed the finances of the champions of England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Turkey and Portugal.
Manchester City, the English Premier League champions, were the only team to enjoy a gain in revenue from the previous season.
City earned 644 million euros (£537.3 million), the most of the eight league winners, which included Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Ajax, Sporting Lisbon, Lille, Inter Milan, and Besiktas.
City’s revenue was 96 million euros greater than 19-20 and also higher than 18-19, the previous pre-Covid season, thanks to prize money from reaching the Champions League final and increased broadcasting revenue.
Bayern’s earnings after taxes in 20-21 was 1.8 million euros.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan, the Serie A champions, suffered a net loss of 245.6 million euros in 20-21, the highest ever for an Italian football club.
Atletico Madrid, the Spanish champions, went from a net deficit of 1.8 million euros in 19-20 to a profit of 111.7 million euros in 20-21.
Despite an increase in earnings, City spent a net of 294 million euros on transfers and has one of the highest salary bills in sport (£351.4 million in 18-19).
With a market worth of 1,237 billion euros, the English champions have the largest squad market value in the world, with Manchester United and Chelsea the only other clubs to break the billion-euro barrier.
