Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken action against the five PDP governors who are unhappy with him ahead of the general election in 2023.
According to Naija News, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) have not hid their desire for Ayu’s resignation or removal.
The G5 governors have called for the PDP Chairman to step up for a Southerner after accusing him of bias and corruption.
It was reported that Ayu has started an offensive against the governors, destroying the names of poll workers the governors had assembled and sent to the party’s national secretariat in Abuja for later submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The PDP National Chairman apparently does not want the party’s future to be left in the hands of people chosen by the dissident governors, despite the fact that the electoral act gives political parties the right to be represented at each voting place and collation center.
According to a source, Ayu and his team have carefully examined the names of potential agents from the G-5 and a few other governments.
_Well, I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but I have to tell you that the National Secretariat is in charge of sending the lists of party agents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in advance of the election._
_”The state chapters can help compile such a list for their states, but the National Chairman decides who acts as a party agent and who doesn’t. Remember that the presidential candidate may also have a preference for some Americans. He should have the right to select who will act as his agents at the polls because the election is his to hold._
Furthermore, there is no way that the PDP campaign committee’s state leadership will be in charge while someone else creates a list of agents. The structure is that the party’s campaign committee is in charge of all elections. Therefore, it is appropriate for the party to demand that all parties involved in creating the list of party agents coordinate with the PCC in their state.
If that’s what you mean when you say that Ayu has rejected some listings, you must realize that this is standard practice to prevent duplication of the aforementioned lists.
According to another source, the party leadership has rejected some governor nominees. The majority of those rejected are public servants, which is in violation of the Electoral Act 2022.
Additionally, according to sources, Ayu urged PDP state leaderships to collaborate with the heads of the state’s campaign committees to develop the final list of party agents.
He (Ayu) made it plain that the lists from the campaign committee are what will be profiled and provided to INEC by the NWC, according to a PDP chairman in one of the South South states, who was quoted in The Nation. Since the state executives have always compiled and sent agents’ lists to Abuja, the decision is unique. This, in our opinion, is an attempt to undermine the leadership of the party in our state and we understand where it is all coming from.”
