Aston Villa centre-back Diego Carlos is set for a period on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles in his home debut against Everton on Saturday.
The 29-year-old summer signing was forced off in stoppage time in Villa’s 2-1 victory over Everton.
Carlos began both of Villa’s initial Premier League games after moving there for £26 million from Sevilla in June.
According to a club release, “The athlete will need surgery and will then start his recovery program.”
Following the game, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard acknowledged that the Brazilian defender’s injury had him “very worried.”
Before pairing Carlos with the returned England international Tyrone Mings against Everton, Gerrard paired Carlos in center defense with Ezri Konsa against Bournemouth.
The only other senior center back who is fit and eligible for selection is Callum Chambers, while Kortney Hause has only recently started training again after suffering a knee injury. Hause’s final game for Villa was in January of the previous year.
