That FEBRUARY used to be the last month of the year.  Although January and February are often considered the first two months of the year, they were actually the final two months to be added to the Gregorian calendar. The Roman calendar only recognized 10 months in the past. However, these two months were used to quantify the winter season, making February the final month on the calendar. This explains why February has the fewest days per month.
