A man was arrested for defiling a seven-year-old child in Anambra.

Chinonso Nwaebonyi, 30, has been arrested by security officials for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old child in Awka, Anambra State’s capital.
Nwaebonyi, a resident of the Izzi community in Ebonyi State, was apprehended after the seven-year-old’s mother reported the event to the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare at Awka.
Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, announced on Thursday.
Ikeanyionwu stated that the suspect initially disputed the charge but then confessed to perpetrating the crime “only once” after being interrogated by security officials.
The statement read in part, “According to the seven-year-old, she and her twin brother have been going to the compound after theirs to play since the holidays began. The suspect started defiling her there She indicated that the suspect had carnal knowledge of her about five times, all of which occurred on Monday and Tuesday.
“On how the mother got to know of the incident, the seven-year-old’s mother of the survivor said, she got to know one of the days she came back from work to bath her kids and discovered that her daughter’s private region was swollen.”On inquiry, she was briefed on what had occurred, and she immediately proceeded to the neighboring compound to protest to the suspect’s guardians, after which she brought her daughter to a pharmacy before arriving at the ministry.
“Meanwhile, the suspect, who had earlier denied the allegation, later confessed to committing the said crime but only once.”
During interrogation, the suspect stated that he never coerced the girl, but only asked her to raise her garments and lie down on the ground.
It was said that the seven-year-old survivor and her twin brother were born to her parents after a decade of childlessness.
As of the time of this report, the suspect had been handed over to police, who will question him and charge him in court.
It should be noted that the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act was passed in 2015, outlawing all forms of violence against women and girls, including rape, defilement, female circumcision, and forceful ejection, and offenders face life imprisonment or a maximum of 14 years in prison, depending on their age and the type of violence committed.
Several people have been detained in Anambra on charges ranging from rape to heresy, and several cases are pending trial in various courts.
