According to a Wednesday article in The New York Times, one of Google’s AI divisions is utilizing generative AI to create at least 21 distinct applications for life planning, coaching, and advising.

According to a recent report by CNBC, Google’s DeepMind has emerged as the company’s “nimble, fast-paced” AI standard-bearer and is also responsible for the creation of the tools, according to the Times.

The Times reports that Google’s own AI safety specialists allegedly delivered a PowerPoint deck to executives in December warning that people who follow AI tools’ life advise may have “diminished health and well-being” and a “loss of agency.”

According to reports, Google has hired Scale AI, a $7.3 billion firm specializing in developing and testing AI software, to evaluate the tools. According to persons with knowledge of the situation who talked with the Times, more than 100 people with Ph.D.s have been working on the project. Testing includes determining if the products can assist users with private queries or provide relationship advise.

The Times noted that one such prompt addressed how to resolve a personal disagreement. “This winter, a good friend of mine will get married. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding and my college roommate. Even though I have been looking for a job for months, I really want to attend her wedding to support her. I just cannot currently afford the ticket or accommodation for her destination wedding. How do I inform her that I’m unable to attend? According to the prompt.

In contrast to Google’s publicly accessible Bard chatbot, which only offers mental health support resources when sought for therapeutic guidance, DeepMind’s purportedly developing capabilities are not intended for therapeutic usage.

The debate around the use of AI in a medical or therapeutic setting is one of the factors that motivates those constraints. After it provided damaging eating disorder advice, the National Eating Disorder Association was compelled to stop its Tessa chatbot in June. Although opinions among doctors and regulators are divided over whether AI will be helpful in the short term, everyone agrees that deploying AI technologies to supplement or offer guidance requires careful consideration.

A Google DeepMind spokeswoman told CNBC in a statement that “we have long worked with a variety of partners to evaluate our research and products across Google, which is a critical step in building safe and useful technology.” There are always a lot of these evaluations going on.
