A few excerpts from the 2024 Budget reveal that Tinubu has no regard for the impoverished -Obi

By; Mary Owolabi

The Labor Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attacked Tinubu’s 2024 budget, saying it demonstrates his indifference to the impoverished.

Obi questioned the administration’s dedication to advancing the goals of Nigerians, a large proportion of whom are experiencing multifaceted poverty.

He expressed regret over the significant amount allotted for the construction of a new Vice President’s office and its renovation, as well as the shocking discovery that over N35.961b was discovered for the President’s and Vice President’s offices, as well as the travel expenses of aides to the White House in the fiscal year 2024.

Obi was unable to reconcile the N20 billion spent on the President and his Vice’s offices, the N15.961 billion spent on aides’ travels, and the spending on security and other necessities.

He maintained that these “reckless expenditure profiles” are a result of Nigerians’ rapidly worsening circumstances, as a growing proportion of them plunge into multidimensional poverty and the government takes little to no interest in their plight.

Considering that the President had been abroad ten times in the first six months of assuming office, Obi questioned the allocation of N45 billion for travel alone.

The Chief of Staff’s office set aside N20 billion for the complete computerization and remodeling of the President’s and Vice President’s offices.

The sum approved by the Senate last week for the Police Trust Fund to protect over 200 million people is around N65 billion, or more than N57 billion if you include N45 billion for transportation and N20 billion for repairs.

Obi called for a drastic revision of the budget, giving health, education, and rescuing people from poverty top priority.

He pleaded with us to acknowledge our challenges, particularly the suffering of the impoverished people, and to focus our resources on building a New Nigeria, which is feasible.
