“Rude gestures and deliberate driving in an unsafe manner are part of the things that causes road rage”.

With an impressively clear articulation, these words announced Route Commander Ayodele J. Ologun’s confidence and deep expertise as he took the stage to discuss the topic, ‘Conflict Management Among Road Users’ during the World Mental Health Day 2020 themed; Public Safety and Mental Health.

The Day was marked on Wednesday, 14th October 2020 at the Marriage Registry Hall in Ikeja Local Government by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ikeja Local Branch with support from the Local Government.

In attendance were: the representative of the Executive Chairman, Engr. (Dr.) Mojeed Alabi Balogun, Vice Chairman Honorable Misbaudeen Yomi Mayongbe; CC Olosegun Ogungbemide, Sector Commander, RS 2,1 Ojodu Lagos State, represented by Route Commander Ayodele J. Ologun; Mr Lawal Oladipo, Opthamology Eye Clinic Department, LASUTH; Imam Luqman Ajala, Co-Chairman Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC); Reverend Isreal Oyetunji, Co-Chairman NIREC and Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ikeja; Comrade Wale Amole, Coordinator, NYCN Ikeja; and 51 participants.

The first speaker, Route Commander Ayodele J. Ologun stated further that other causes road rage include: “Cutting others off in a lane, Chasing other motorists, Flashing light or Sounding horn when the Traffic light is red, Internationally causing coalition between vehicles, Exiting or leaving your vehicle to start fight, Drunkenness or drug use,…”.

He however, advised that being a polite driver, keeping your environment calm, avoiding distractions, etc can avoid road rage.

A participant advised that there should be bill boards with safety measures written on them for people to see while driving but, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Route Commander said that bill boards causes distraction while driving because if drivers are trying to read its message, they might hit another car as their eyes which should be focused on the road is elsewhere.

Another participant asked the lecturer about the documents a driver must have and he replied, ” A Federal Road Safety Corps officer will ask for Drivers’ license, Valid Vehicle’s license, and Valid Insurance Certificate. A Police officer will ask for a Central Motor Registry (CMR) in addition to the former three”.

“When someone provokes you on the road, don’t fight with the person, don’t die together, remain safe and keep safe”. The lecturer concluded.

The second lecturer, Mr Lawal Oladipo of the Opthamology Eye Clinic Department, LASUTH, stressed the importance of an healthy eye and body to drivers and man as a whole. According to him, “Without the eye, you can’t ambulate”.

He told the participants about different eye diseases and how to take care of it at its early stage by visiting the appropriate doctor. He advised further that eating fruits and fishes like Tuna, Mackerel, Titus, etc provide nutrients to the eye and the body itself.

The host, Comrade Wale Amole, wrapped up the event thanking God, the guests, speakers and participants for making the programme a successful one and said that the programme was solely organized to, ” disseminate information to the youths on how to take care of themselves on the road and as a human being”.
