How we broke a 20-year jinx to reach the Olympic quarterfinals—D’Tigress

By: Adisa Deborah

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, coached by head coach Rena Wakama and captain Amy Okonkwo, defeated Canada to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals.

The African champions, captained by Achonwa, became the first African team in Olympic basketball history to get past the group stage. The squad won two games, ensuring Canada’s early return home.

Despite being rated 12th in the world, Elizabeth Balogun led Canada to an 11-0 victory against Nigeria. Ezinne Kalu, a significant player, scored 21 points, while Elizabeth Balogun had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and three assists. Despite placing fourth in the FIBA Women’s World Cup, Canada was surprised to be upset by the outstanding D’Tigress.

Nigeria, led by its tough defense, is ready to challenge anyone in the competition. Natalie Achonwa, who retired in 2014, admitted that D’Tigress was the best team. Nigeria became the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, defeating two of their three opponents. This is African countries’ first win in 37 games in the women’s tournament, following Nigeria’s victory over South Korea in 2004. The team’s resilience and commitment will be tested in their upcoming quarterfinal match against South Korea.
