Olubadan’s burial is scheduled for Friday.

By; Mary Owolabi.

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Mohood Olalekan Balogun, passed away on Thursday night and is scheduled to be buried on Friday, March 15, 2024.

A source close to the family of the late monarch revealed that the king is likely to be buried according to Islamic tradition at Aliwo Palace, where his ancestors were buried.

Oba Balogun was born in 1942 and was the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan land. He was a former lawmaker who represented Oyo Central Senatorial District between 1999 and 2003. He ascended the throne on March 11, 2022, after the demise of his predecessor, Oba Saliu Adetunji, who passed away on January 2, 2022, after ruling from March 4, 2016.

In the wake of the recent passing of the Olubadan of Ibadan, the next in line to ascend the throne is Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who is the head of the military line of the Olubadan system. The transition of power is expected to be marked by a symbolic ascension ceremony at the Ita Baale Palace, heralded by palace drummers moving from Alli-Iwo to the palace.

Owolabi’s son, Sunbo Owolabi, was a former Commissioner for Water Resources in the administration of late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi. Following Owolabi in the line of succession is Rashidi Ladoja, former governor and senator, who heads the civil line as Otun Olubadan of Ibadan. The transition of power will also result in promotions within the Olubadan system, particularly in the Balogun line, from where the new Olubadan will emerge.
