The 2024 census is going to happen as scheduled, the Senate tells Nigerians.
By: Mary Owolabi.
The Senate has confirmed that the upcoming population and housing census in November will be held as scheduled. Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity and Population, noted that most of the nominees are people coming for the second time. The last census was conducted in 2006, with a population of 140 million. The last census was planned for 2022 but was later moved to 2023.
President Bola Tinubu has pledged his administration’s support for the next census, stating its importance in crucial aspects of national planning. Nigeria’s President, Ningi, has expressed confidence in the country’s ability to conduct a population census after 11 years without one.
He cited the lack of a census as a significant obstacle to human development and the lack of political will to take the United Nations resolution on population. Ningi emphasized that the commission and personnel are ready, and only require the President’s announcement of the census date.
He also highlighted that 65% of logistics for machines and personnel training have been completed. Ningi urged nominees to recognize the importance of the census, stating that the last national census was over a decade ago. The census is considered a crucial aspect of human development.
The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the selection of 19 nominees for the national census. The selection process is based on their pedigree, experience, and exposure to the system.
The NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, stated that the essence of the census is to develop a mechanism to lay a developmental plan that meets the aspirations of Nigerians. Two of the 19 nominees will not be present due to the appointment of the commissioner representing Ondo, who was appointed Secretary to the State Government.
The nominee for Kaduna State, Sa’adatu Dogon Bauchi, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for finding women among the nominees worthy to serve as commissioners in the NPC.
The selected nominees include Sa’adatu Dogon Bauchi, Emmanuel Eke, Dr. Clifford Zirra, Chidi Ezeoke, Anambra, Borno, Bishop Alex Ukam, Cross River, Dr Jeremiah Nwankwegu, and Ebonyi. The screening will ensure the successful implementation of the census and the development of a developmental plan that meets the aspirations of Nigerians.
