Odunlade Adekola’s Movie Orisa nears #100 million After Three Weeks at the Nigerian Box Office

In spite of the influx of Hollywood movies, Yoruba blockbusters are at all-time high. Odunlade Adekola’s rich-cultured movie Orisa almost hits #100 million gross profits within three weeks since its debut.

When talking about the evolution of Nollywood, one cannot but reflect on how far the industry have come, especially Yoruba Nollywood movies. Talking about the likes of Arugba, Maami, etc.  Moviegoers experienced a sense of nostalgia and de ja vu as they gave positive reviews. The movie portrayed story-telling in the indigenous fashion. Orisa the movie walked viewers into a journey of a world filled with lessons. Orisa the movie was applauded by viewers for its costumes, production deigns, acting performance and dialogues that immerse viewers in a rich cultural experience and cultural values.

The movie with its newly released figures by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, showed evidently showed that Orisa Orisa recorded over #20 million between August 4 and10, 2023. It opened with #40 million between July 21 and 27, 2023 and between July 28-3rd of August, it recorded another whooping #28 million. This brings it to a total of over #88 million within a space of three weeks.

Although Odunlade Adekola’s movie, Orisa has maintained the fourth position on the domestic box office chart, it is still ranking as the top leading local title in cinemas across Nigeria. The movie is still showing nationwide at all cinemas.

Relatably, Hollywood movie, Barbie still stands at an all-time high and as number one with over #37 million between August 4, 2023 and August 10, 2023, bringing its cumulative since its release to #160 million. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One takes spot number 2 with #28 million. This makes it one month in the cinema with a total of #200 million in gross.
